Homemade Oat Milk Recipe

Oat milk has become increasingly popular as a dairy-free alternative to cow’s milk. It’s creamy, slightly sweet, and works well in coffee, cereal, and baking. Making your own oat milk at home is easy, affordable, and allows you to customize the flavor to your liking. In this recipe, we’ll show you how to make oat milk from scratch.

Ingredients for Homemade Oat Milk:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 4 cups water
  • Optional: sweetener of choice (such as maple syrup or dates), vanilla extract, pinch of salt

How to Make Homemade Oat Milk:

  1. Soak the oats: Place the rolled oats in a bowl and cover them with water. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes, or overnight in the refrigerator for a smoother consistency.
  2. Blend the oats: Drain and rinse the oats. Add them to a blender along with 4 cups of fresh water. Blend on high for about 30-45 seconds until smooth.
  3. Strain the mixture: Place a nut milk bag, cheesecloth, or a clean kitchen towel over a bowl. Pour the oat mixture into the bag or cloth and squeeze or press out as much liquid as possible. You should be left with a creamy oat milk in the bowl.
  4. Sweeten and flavor (optional): If desired, add a sweetener such as maple syrup or a couple of pitted dates to the oat milk. You can also add a splash of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt for extra flavor.
  5. Store and enjoy: Transfer the oat milk to a clean container with a lid and store it in the refrigerator. It will keep for about 3-5 days. Shake well before using, as it may separate slightly.

  • Rolled oats: Oats are a great source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They’re also naturally gluten-free, making oat milk a suitable option for those with gluten sensitivities.
  • Water: The base of oat milk, water helps to blend the oats into a creamy liquid.
  • Sweetener (optional): Adding a sweetener is entirely optional and can be adjusted to taste. Maple syrup, honey, or dates are popular choices.

  • Salt: A pinch of salt can enhance the overall flavor of the oat milk.
